The Brand of You — 2012

So, you’re quiet and you’re fabulous; that much we know.  But what’s your particular brand of fabulousness?

Fifteen years ago, Tom Peters wrote a landmark piece for Fast Company called The Brand of You.  And it’s as spot on now as it was then.  Consider this:

Regardless of age, regardless of position, regardless of the business we happen to be in, all of us need to understand the importance of branding. We are CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.

It’s that simple — and that hard. And that inescapable.

(And now that social media is EVERYWHERE, Peters’ words are even more important.)

You have things you want to do in this world – whether that’s getting ahead in a huge corporation or having more than your mother read your blog.

You may be an introvert, you may be someone always called “quiet.”  But everything Peters says applies to you as well.

You have to have the confidence to talk about yourself, what you do and what your accomplishments are – authentically, quietly, maybe, but powerfully.  I’ve talked before about bragging; it’s a word that has a lot of negative connotations.  So think about your brand and your message instead.

So the next question becomes how.  How do I talk about myself and what I do?

You need to adopt the thinking of big brands.  Because that’s the beauty of branding; it’s completely scalable.  Just because you are one woman with a blog doesn’t mean you can’t have a mission statement just like Coca-Cola.the brand of you -- fast company

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately not only thinking about my personal brand, but how that brand manifests itself.  What’s my mission statement?  What are my key messages?  What do I do? What don’t I do?

I want you to start thinking about your personal brand: who are you and what do you stand for?  In a series of posts, I’m going to dive into this topic a bit more and help you define your personal brand.  And then we’ll talk about the tools you can use to share your brand.
